In 2025, the Church celebrates the Jubilee Year of Hope. The theme “Pilgrims of Hope”, was inspired by Romans 5:5 – “Hope does not disappoint”. In his papal bull announcing the Jubilee, Pope Francis shares his hopes that the Jubilee will “be a moment of genuine, personal encounter with the Lord Jesus, the “door” (cf. Jn 10:7.9) of our salvation, whom the Church is charged to proclaim always, everywhere and to all as “our hope” (1 Tim 1:1).”

The Jubilee Year will begin with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica on 24 December 2024. It will continue until the closing of the Holy Door on 6 January 2026, the solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

What is a Jubilee Year?
The Jubilee Year is a rare and sacred tradition which is observed every 25 years. The concept was inspired by the biblical practice of a Jubilee year, as described in Leviticus 25, which mandated a year of rest and renewal every 50 years. Catholics are called to live their faith by embodying the core themes of the Jubilee: renewal, reconciliation, and a closer relationship with Christ.
The Jubilee tradition reflects the Church’s commitment to promoting spiritual renewal, penitence, and mercy. It is also an occasion for global Catholic unity and outreach.
